Who would have thought that KMUW’s Signal Expansion Project would require the services of a sculptor? As it turns out, we needed a unique way to recognize our Tower Power Team Members and Partners. These are the individuals and organizations that have pledged five-figure contributions to help make KMUW available to over 92,000 people in our new coverage area and begin broadcasting three separate streams of HD Radio™ programming.

Sisyphus Stone Works is a business specializing in stone signage, monuments, architectural elements and sculpture in addition to being an underwriter of programming on KMUW. The owner of Sisyphus Stone Works, Mike Tolbert, has been a Public Radio listener for many years and has repeatedly heard us identify KMUW as “Your Connection To The World.” He came up with an original design that incorporates a stylized radio antennae coming out of a partial sphere that is meant to suggest the world. Sisyphus Stone Works will sculpt this design from a beautiful material called steatite and then customize the sculpture for each of our major donors.

KMUW considers support of the arts and cultural communities of South Central Kansas to be part of our mission. Sisyphus Stone Works has managed to combine their love for stone and for architecture into an outlet for their creative work. After seeing some of the signage, monuments, stone furniture and original sculpture coming from Mike Tolbert’s studio in Newton, we were thrilled when he offered to create a truly unique memento for major supporters of KMUW’s Signal Expansion Project.
